Echobox Radio Volume 41.

Unearthed tapes from the internet archives.

Coucou,

Tomorrow at 4pm marks another installment of our monthly residency on Echobox Radio. This might be the first time in a few months that we’re back behind the mic and in charge of curation, as we’ve been handing over the reins to various artists we’ve released throughout the year. But that’s okay, because for this occasion, we’ve put together something special.

Stepping away from contemporary music, we took a deep dive into the internet archives to unearth sounds from the 20th century from, you guessed it, Switzerland.

Like Hansel & Gretel following a trail of breadcrumbs, this journey began during our winter break in December when we stumbled upon a mysterious YouTube user, VisioncreationnewSon, who had uploaded music by the Bermuda Idiots. The name of the band might ring a bell since we released a compilation of their work as the third release of Dee Dee’s Picks. But here’s where it got interesting: the tracks in this upload were completely unfamiliar to us.

Curious, we reached out to Petra, one of the original members, singer, and bassist of the Bermudas. To our surprise, she had completely forgotten about this mysterious tape. After some digging, we managed to track down VisioncreationnewSon, who pointed us toward an obscure cassette archive online. That discovery snowballed into something much bigger, where we ended up unearthing over twenty cassette tapes we’d never heard before.

So, for this show, we’ve compiled some of our favorite finds—music recorded between the late ‘70s and mid-‘80s, spanning wave, spoken word, post-punk, folk, psych, and noise. The recordings are lo-fi, raw, and in some cases, on the verge of inaudible. We took some time to remaster what we could to enhance your listening experience. However, it is worth noting that the abrasiveness only adds to the intimacy since these were sounds created in the spirit of experimentation and secrecy and probably never meant to see the light of day (at least certainly not over 40 years later for a radio show broadcasted from Amsterdam).

We’re still sifting through the tapes, so this might turn into an ongoing series. But for now, this will do.

Wishing you a lovely day,
-Dee Dee
